University of Oklahoma to conduct modernization study for Croatia weather officials
NORMAN, Oklahoma: The University of Oklahoma will conduct a year-long study on modernizing Croatia’s weather service.
A team from the school’s Office of Weather Programs and Projects was chosen to undertake the $500,000 (€321,000) study to determine how to update the country’s weather service infrastructure, which is left over from the Soviet era, said John T. Snow, the dean of the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences.
Adverse weather, flooding and environmental hazards cost the Croatian economy about $218 million (€140 million) per year, said James E. Hocker, research associate at the college. Better weather prediction could boost tourism.
The university program has also been approached by Morocco and the Philippines to do similar studies.
