Lorde’s parents from New Zealand: her mother, Mrs Sonja Yelich, is of Croatian origin, and her father, Mr. Vic O’Connor, is of Irish origin.
Mr. Vic is an engineer, while Mrs. Sonja is an established poetess in New Zealand. She studied literature at the University of Aucland.
In 2005 her book of poetry Get Some won Jessie Mackay Award for the ‘Best First Book of Poetry’ at the New Zealand Book Awards.
Her books have been chosen for the Best New Zealand Poems series in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2008. Source.
