Zvonko Vranesic Croatian-Canadian International Chess Master and Professor at the University of Toronto

At the University of Toronto, he served as the Director of the Computer Engineering Program from 1991 to 1995, and as Chair of the Division of Engineering Science from 1995 to 2000.
He was one of the co-founders of Microdesign Ltd. (in 1980); a high technology company which became a wholly owned R & D arm of the Meridian Technologies Co. in Toronto. He worked on numerous consulting projects in the area of computer engineering. Presently, he is a Principal Software Engineer at the Altera Toronto Technology Center.
His research interests include computer architecture and FPGA technology. He has co-authored five books and has published over 150 scientific papers. His books “Computer Organization” (co-authored by V.C. Hamacher and S.G. Zaky), “Fundamentals of Digital Logic with VHDL Design” (co-authored by S. Brown), and “Fundamentals of Digital Logic with Verilog Design” (co-authored by S. Brown) have become widely used (worldwide) in undergraduate courses on these subjects.

Professor Zvonko Vranešić is a member of the
Computer Group of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Engineering

He represented Canada in numerous chess competitions. He holds the title of International Master.

Zvonko Vranesic is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto. He is also a well-known chess player.
He has co-authored books such as Fundamentals Of Digital Logic With Verilog Design, Digital Design With VHDL, and Computer Organization And Embedded Systems.
Vranesic was born in 1938 in Zagreb. He emigrated to Canada when he was young and studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto. He went on to teach the subject at the university. He represented Canada in international chess tournaments and holds the titles of International Master of Chess and International Master of Correspondence Chess.

In the 70s, along with his student Michael Valenti, Zvonko Vranesic was co-author of Chute (CHess, University of Toronto, Engineering). He supervised Valenti’s 1974 Masters Thesis, and co-authored Experiences with Chute after the WCCC 1977 in the Proceedings of the 1977 annual ACM conference
Zvonko Vranesic represented Canada at five Chess Olympiads, he scored a Grandmaster norm at the 19th Chess Olympiad in Siegen. Notable are his wins against Leonid Stein at the 16th Olympiad in Tel Aviv 1964, and versus David Levy in Lone Pine 1975.
