Ivan Saric of Croatia European Chess Champion for 2018

Croatian chess player Ivan Šarić (27) won the European title for 2018 in Georgia, during the European Chess Championships organized in the city of Batumi. Along with the European title of Zvonko Kožul in 2006, this is the greatest success of Croatian chess. He won the title of Under 18 World Youth Chess Champion in 2008. He holds a notable victory over the world champion Magnus Carlsen, which he achieved at the 2014 Chess Olympiad in Norway. Međunarodno priznata pijanistica i pjesnikinja, Dubrovkinja Ivana Marija Vidović gostovat će u sklopu 40. koncertne sezone – Amici della Musica u Teatru Garibaldi u Mazari del Vallo na Siciliji.Dva koncerta u nizu nazvana “La canzone e poesia” oba iste večeri i to u subotu 24. ožujka s početkom u 18:15 a potom u 20:45. Vidović je pozvana kao posebna gošća ovog projekta. Nastupit će uz Giovannija Mattaliana, eklektičkog talijanskog klarinetistu, saksofonistu, skladatelja i profesora na Konzervatoriju u Palermu.

Kristian Kreković (1901-1985), distinguished Croatian painter, spent the years 1948-1952 in Sweden, where he made several portraits of members of the Schmitz family in Malmo. It is known that during that period Kreković made a portrait of the Swedish King Gustav Vth. He also portrayed Mahatma Gandhi in his atelier in Paris in 1931, who often visited him. Upon the intiative of Mrs. Ljerka Galic of the Croatian Foundation Heritage, an exhibition of Kreković’s works of art has been organized in Malmo in October 2017.

Can you help? Jasna Roy is trying to rise funds necessary to acquire copy rights, translate to Croatian, and publish a book “Health at Every Size” by Linda Bacon Phd. This book inspired a new, groundbreaking program of the same name, meant for treating non-specific eating disorders, practiced in the Psychiatric hospital Sveti Ivan in Zagreb, Croatia. Every participant of the program, and also every other person struggling with any eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and non-specific disorders) would greatly benefit from having the book available in their mother tongue.

The French opera magazine Diapason has awarded the newly released CD Germanico in Germania (opera by Nicola Porpora) with their prestigious Diapason d’or in their March issue. The CD honored in this way has been performed by Max Emanuel Cencic (Germanico), Julia Lezhneva (Ersinda), Dilyara Idrisova (Rosmonda), Mary-Ellen Nesi (Arminio), Juan Sancho (Segeste), Hasnaa Bennani (Cecina), with Capella Cracoviensis (orchestra), Jan Tomasz Adamus (conductor). This prestigious award will be resumed in December 2018.

Miro Gavran to be awarded with "Gold Merit Badge of the Republic of Austria" by president Van der Bellen

Alexander Van der Bellen, President of Austria made a decision to award Miro Gavran with “Gold Merit Badge of the Republic of Austria”. It will be awarded on March 20th 2018. He received international “Dr. Alois Mock Europa-Preis” award for affirmation of European values in his literary works in December in Vienna. Prominent publisher from Vienna – “Seifert Verlag” published four of his novels in hardcover. Gavran has had nine theatre premieres in German in Austria and Germany so far and there is one more premiere coming up in Vienna in Septermber 2018.

Marijan Zubanovic 1931-2016 Croatian technical thermodynamics expert in France

Marijan Zubanović, born in 1931 in the village of Virje on Croatian north, completed his studies of mechanical engineering in 1957 at the University of Zagreb. In 1959, not willing to work for military industry of ex-Yugoslavia, he emigrated to France. In 1970, he founded and directed STS enterprise (Systeme Thermodynamique Serivce). He solved the problem of air conditioning for the first French atomic submarine “Le Redoutable”, and patented cooling systems for French nuclear power plants.

Franjo Krežma entered the Vienna Conservatory as nine-years-old boy, and was the youngest student of this Conservatory ever! He ended his student days at the age of 13. He began the spectacular concert career all over Europe. When he was sixteen, a concert audience in Rome, Prague, Venice, Geneva and Paris already adored him. The critics pointed to the beauty of his sound and a phenomenal interpretation, and one wrote: “Anatomy of the genius is futile work!” In Italy, he was honored to play on Paganini’s violin, and at age 17, he became a concertmaster at the Berlin Royal Orchestra (today’s Berlin Philharmonic). His compositions are performed by Krešimir Marmilić and Yoko Nishii, who issued a CD.

Jelko Yuresha Croatian ballet prodigy at the Royal Ballet in London since 1962

Jelko Yuresha was born in 1937 as Željko Jureša in Croatia’s capital Zagreb. In 1958, Jelko Yuresha emigrated to England, later gaining United Kingdom citizenship. Yuresha made his professional debut as a first guest artist with the newly formed Irish Theatre Ballet in Dublin. He joined London Festival Ballet (today English National Ballet) in 1959. In 1959, Yuresha partnered with Belinda Wright at a Royal Command Performance before Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in Manchester. Jelko Yuresha and Belinda Wright married in 1961. In 2017, Mr. Jelko Yuresha has donated his valuable ballet collection to his native City of Zagreb.

The recital of distinguished pianist Stefan Warzycki is being given in aid of the International Trust for Croatian Monuments, which was founded in 1991 under the auspices of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (UK) in response to damage and destruction of monuments of culture in Croatia caused by war. It has supported the restoration of churches, cathedrals, museums, libraries and works of art. All of the music in this recital is for the left hand alone, composed by J.S. Bach (Brahms’s superb arrangement), F. Bridge, D. Lipatti, M. Moszkowski, L. Godowski, P.Z. Novak). The concert will be held at Leighton House Museum, 12 Holland Park Road, London, W14 8LZ, on Wed 28 Feb 2018 at 7:30 p.m.

Marijan Đuzel (1990), extraordinarily talented young Croatian pianist, studied with Djordje Stanetti and Dubravka Tomšić, and currently studies at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel with Aleksandar Madžar. He gave recitals at many festivals such as Music at Eelswamp (Thailand), International Keyboard Institute & Festival (New York), Nei Suoni dei Luoghi (Italy), as well as Hvar Summer Festival, Zadar Concert Season, Rab Musical Evenings, Concerts in Euphrasian Basilica, Youth at Lisinski (Croatia) and others.

Lady Jadranka Beresford-Peirse, b. Njerš, of Croatian origin, lives in London, and is a founder of The International Trust for Croatian Monuments already in 1991. Since then, she has organized numerous humanitarian and cultural events and undertakings. Here we reproduce her very interesting article published in London by “The Bridge”, a journal of Croatian community in England, which deals with The Šenoa House, which is a private museum in the city of Zagreb, directed by Mrs. Jasmina Reis. August Šenoa is significant Croatian writer from the 19th century, one of the trademarks of Croatian literature.

MOHO discontinuity discovered by Andrija Mohorovic described in Japan by Kiyoo Wadati already in 1925

The title of the 1925 article published by Kiyoo Wadati, distinguished Japanese seismologist, is “On Mohorovičić Wave appeared in Tazima-Earthquake”, published in the Journal of the Meteorological Society of Japan in No. 8, 1925. It is indeed a big surprise to see such an echo of Mohorovičić’s pioneering work in seismology. As we can see, his name appears already in the title of the article. The MOHO discontinuity, the notion now in current use throughout the world, has been discovered in Zagreb by this great scientist in 1909.

2CELLOS in the Philippines

2CELLOS have been exceptionally warmly received in the Philippines, where they performed some of their greatest hits from classical and rock music. They also took part in promoting the Philippine quisine and tourism. 2CELLOS are classically trained Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, who have garnered millions of views on YouTube for their sensational renditions of some of the music world’s greatest and most well-known pop and rock hits.

Denis Vignot from France wrote a deeply moving historical novel entitled Le Choix (The Choice), dealing with Croatia in the early 1990s during the Yugoslav and Serbian agression on Croatia. It is based on personal experiances in Croatia, dealing with love, with the country in trouble, with honor. This extraordinary book, published in France in 20016, containing more than 750 pages. One of the main protagonists in the book is Anton Domovina, former memeber of the French Legion, which the readers will easily recognize (Domovina = Homeland, in Croatian). The author, Denis Vignot, deserves our deep gratitude for having written this monumental literary testimony.

Mihael Ferić, distinguished Croatian expert for tamburitza music, founded the Tambura Museum in the town of Brod na Savi in 2012, which is unique in the world. It contains a fascinating collection of tamburitza instruments of amazing versatility, since the mid 19th century until today, as well as a rich collection of various manuals and books. The most valuable book has been written by Mr. Ferić himself, entitled “Croatian Tambura Breviary”, written in Croatian. Miro Gavran's novel "Kafka's Friend" published in Bulgarian in 2017

Miro Gavran is the greatest contemporary Croatian writer, whose plays and novels have been translated into fourty languages worldwide. His novel “Kafka’s friend” has been released in Sofia, Bulgaria, by respected publishing house “Paradox”. The translation into Bulgarian was done by Valentina Sedeveeva. This novel has so far been translated from its original Croatian, into Dutch, Czech, Slovakian, English and Albanian, as well as partially, into French and Esperanto. It tells a powerful and emotional story of two writers and friends, Franz Kafka and Max Brod, and the women that determined their destiny.
