Najka Mirkovic inspired by flying residents of the city of Dubrovnik – the pigeons
The new photographic cycle of Najka Mirković – a lover of photography who belongs to the group of Dubrovnik-based photographers, observes the pigeons, eternal guardians of the city walls. All citizens of Dubrovnik have photographs as little children chasing pigeons by Orlando Column. A photograph with pigeons in front of St Blaise’s Church and in the Open-air Market was part of the city cults in each generation, because pigeons have profound symbolism in Dubrovnik’s Judeo-Christian tradition.

Marin Soljacic professor at MIT speaking about newest discoveries in nanophotonics and applications
Marin Soljačić, distinguished Croatian-American physicst and professor at MIT, USA, delivered a very interesting talk at the 2015 Tech Day, dealing with newest achievements in nanonphotonics and possible applications. Nanophotonics is a sub-field of nanotechnology that deals with light (photons). Nanophotonic techniques provide ultimate opportunities for tailoring behavior of light, thus offering a potential to enable a wide variety of important applications. This talk highlights recent work in this area, including security applications (for consumers and soldiers), energy conversion, and displays.
Marin Soljacic helps to redesign the light bulb
Humanity started recycling relatively early in its evolution: there are proofs that trash recycling was taking place as early as in the 500 BC. What about light recycling? Consider light bulbs: more than one hundred and thirty years ago Thomas Edison patented the first commercially viable incandescent light bulb, so that “none but the extravagant” would ever “burn tallow candles”, paving the way for more than a century of incandescent lighting. Now, in a study published in Nature Nanotechnology on January 11th 2016 (online), a team of MIT researchers describes another way to recycle light emitted at unwanted infrared wavelengths while optimizing the emission at useful visible wavelengths.
Drago Stambuk promoting global haiku consciousness and deepening friendship between Brazil and Croatia
When Dr Drago Štambuk (on the photo) proposed the creation of a Haiku Award in memory of Professor Vladimir Devidé, Croatian mathematician and the pioneer of haiku in Croatia, he suggested that modern and traditional haiku should be treated as equals. This is especially crucial for international haiku composition and competition, since not all languages can reflect Japanese syllabic patterns, nor do all climates mirror the four clear seasons which find expression in classical haiku. We also illustrate interesting contacts with Brazililan poets, established by Dr Drago Štambuk as a former Croatian ambassador in that country.

Mladen Ibler and Birgitta Fritz writing about Johan Franke a Croatian castle commander in Sweden in 15th ct.
The castle commander Johan Vale or Franke in Sweden is identified by Dr Mladen Ibler (on the photo) as Ivan Anž Frankopan, the eldest son of Count Nikola IV, viceroy (banus) of Croatia from 1426. The Scandinavian king Erik of Pomerania had met the young man at the court of his cousin King Sigmund in Budapest. After having decided to go on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land he had chosen this nobleman, who was familiar with Mediterranean conditions, to lead the tour. In Jerusalem the king knighted him and then afterwards recompensed him with the enfeoffments in Sweden. Besides those connections between the Scandinavian king and the Frankopan family the article also presents proofs of the king’s stay at Dubrovnik, both on the way to Palestine and on the way back.
