Ivana Marija Vidovic translated into Croatian the verses written in 1876 in honor of Franjo Krezma in Verona
In 1876, young Croatian violinist Franjo Krežma (on the photo), then at the age of 14, had a series of three consecutive concerts at the Ristori Theatre in Verona, on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th December. The concerts have been announced by beautiful verses written by anonymous Italian author G.D. The verses have been translated into Croatian in 2018 by Ivana Marija Vidović, distinguished Croatian pianist, poetesse and writer. Franjo Krežma was a violin prodigy: he earned his diploma at the Conservatory of Vienna at the age of 13! He died very young, at the age of 19.
University of Zadar to host Inaugural "May of Brešan" in 2018
Ivo Brešan (27 May 1936 – 3 January 2017) was a Croatian playwright, novelist, and screenwriter, known for political satire. From May 18-20, 2018 the University of Zadar will host the the inaugural “May of Brešan”, an international academic conference dedicated to examining Brešan’s works. Those wanting to participate in the conference have until December 1, 2017 to register.
Srdjan Bulat to perform in Yerevan, Armenia July 2016
The young guitarist from the city of Split and graduate from the Royal Academy in London, Srdjan Bulat, will hold a cycle of chamber recitals in the capital city of Armenia, Yerevan. As part of the Hassfest guitar festival July 4-9, 2016, he will hold a solo recital, in which he will perform works from Spanish, Armenian and Croatian composers, thus contributing to this first joint festival of music and visual art which will be attended by numerous young artists from 15 countries worldwide.
Nikola Tesla Croatian citizen advised the City Hall of Croatia's capital Zagreb in 1892 about electrification
In 1892, Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) has been invited by Milan Amruš, Mayor of the city of Zagreb, to visit the City Hall in order to give advice about future electrification. An interesting article from 1892 has been published in the Zagreb newspapers, which we provide for the first in English translation from Croatian original. We cite the following significant sentence from this 1892 article: Mr. Tesla considers it his duty, as a native son of this country [Croatia] , to assist the Zagreb City Council in this matter offering his advice and helping in every way he can . The country he meant here is without any doubt Croatia. As a Croatian citizen, Nikola Tesla possessed the passport issued in the city of Zagreb in 1883. Miro Gavran's comedy premiered in Lithuania's capital Vilnius on 10 March 20016
Miro Gavran’s comedy “Henpecked Husbands” had its premiere in popular theater Domino in Vilnius, Lithuania, on March 10th. Director is Kostas Smoriginas, main roles are performed by Edita Užaite, Ineta Stasiulyte, Eimutis Kvoščiauskas, Mantas Vaitiekunas, Andrius Bialobžeskis, Evaldas Jaras and Sandra Daukšaite-Petrulene. The works of Miro Gavran have been translated into 38 languages. His books had over 200 editions in Croatia and abroad. Based on his dramas and comedies, there were more than 300 theatric premieres worldwide, seen by more than three million of people.
Martin Lazar young Croatian mathematician visiting the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics in Bilbao
In the period of May – June 2015, Dr Martin Lazar, a young Croatian mathematician from the Univeristy of Dubrovnik, visited the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics in Bilbao, Spain, in order to continue already established collaboration with its director, Professor Enrique Zuazua. Professor Zuazua is a distinguished international expert in Control Theory, a branch of Applied Mathematics. Dr Lazar had an opportunity to actively participate in numerous activities at the Center (seminars, courses, workshops, …), to present his previous results, as well as to get acquainted with the recent results and open problems of applied mathematics.
Najka Mirkovic inspired by flying residents of the city of Dubrovnik – the pigeons
The new photographic cycle of Najka Mirković – a lover of photography who belongs to the group of Dubrovnik-based photographers, observes the pigeons, eternal guardians of the city walls. All citizens of Dubrovnik have photographs as little children chasing pigeons by Orlando Column. A photograph with pigeons in front of St Blaise’s Church and in the Open-air Market was part of the city cults in each generation, because pigeons have profound symbolism in Dubrovnik’s Judeo-Christian tradition.
Lovre Stavun linking Croatia and Japan via his native city of Zadar
Lovre Štavun is a young Croatian tourist guide living in the city of Zadar, who is very fond of Japanese language and culture. It is even more impressive that he learned Japanese without visiting Japan yet! In his article, that he wrote in English and Japanese (sic!), he discusses the possibilities of offering completely new contents for tourists visiting Croatia, with emphasis on his native Zadar. “How many natural wonders does the country of Croatia possess, but those same wonders are rarely ever offered as something of value to Japanese tourists.”

Croatian writer Miro Gavran will have premiere of his play “All About Women” on 27th October 2015 in famous Russian theater “Et Cetera” in Moscow. Director of Gavran’s play is young and talented Viktorija Pecernikova. The play was translated from Croatian into Russian by Sergej Girin. Actors are Angela Belian Skaya, Natalija Zhitkova, Olga Belova, Elizabeta Ryzhikh, Katarina Buylova and Anastasia Kormilitsyana. Gavran’s play “All About Women” had 41 premieres in Europe, North and South America and India so far. Miro Gavran’s plays were translated into 38 languages, there have been 300 world premieres and more then 3 million people around the world saw them.

The second edition of Miro Gavran’s novel “Kafka’s friend” was just published in Dutch. Translation was done by Sanja Kregar while publisher is “KLIN” from Amsterdam. Dimitrije Popovic’s painting from series called “Kafka” was used as book cover. The novel was published in Croatian by Mozaik Books in 2011 and after that it was published in Czech, English, Slovak, Dutch and Esperanto in parts. Miro Gavran’s work has been translated into 38 languages and his novels had more then 200 different editions in Croatia and abroad.
Zlata Blazina Tomic & Vesna Blazina and their monograph Expelling the Plague from the city of Dubrovnik
Zlata Blažina Tomić on the photo is a medical historian who worked at McGill University’s Osler Library, Canada. Vesna Blažina is a translator and librarian who worked at the Université de Montréal, Canada. “Studying an extraordinarily rich set of documents in Dubrovnik, the authors Zlata Blažina Tomić and Vesna Blažina bring scholarly attention to an early public health office dedicated to surveillance and containment of plague epidemics. Social and medical historians will find this work very valuable.” Wrote Ann G. Carmichael of the Indiana University, USA.

Theater Divadlo v Podpalubi from Bratislava, Slovakia had 100th performance of Miro Gavran’s play “All About Women” with author attending on September 30th, 2015. Translation into Slovak was done by Jan Jankovic while director is Minim F. Otzow. Main roles are performed by Andrea Profantova, Andrea Karnasova and Bibiana Ondrejkova. Miro Gavran is a Croatian playwright and novelist, whose works have been translated into thirty-five languages. His plays have had more than two hundred first nights worldwide and have been seen by more than two million theatregoers.
Yoko Nishii Japanese pianist issued 2CD in Tokyo with music of Croatian female composer Dora Pejacevic
Yoko Nishii, Japanese pianist, entered Music Academy “Ino Mirković” situated in Lovran, Croatia with full scholarship for 2 years. Thanks to her great talent and dedicated work, she completed the academic program in only 2 years of studies (normally it lasts 4 years) and graduated with excellent grades under prof. Evgeny Zarafiants in September 2000. In 2012 she has produced and given the concert of the complete piano works by the first Croatian female composer “Dora Pejačević” as a project “the Cultural Transmission from Ise to the World” in Ise, Japan. In February 2015 she has released 2CD ” Dora Pejacevic: Complete Piano Works ” (a set of 2 CDs) from Japanese CD label “Herb Classics”. Yoko Nishii speaks Croatian language.
Marijan Busic: The Cravat Day to be marked on October 18th each year throughout the world
Academia Cravatica, a non-profit institution dedicated to the phenomen and culture of Croatian necktie, the cravat, aims to promote the cravat as a part of Croatian, European and also world heritage. This year, Academia Cravatica decided to pay special attention to international celebration of the Cravat Day, and is now in the process of inviting numerous Croats and their ancestors living abroad to join together on October 18th, put on their Croatian cravat with pride and, joining with others, remember the values it represents. The founder and director of Academia Cravatica is Mr. Marijan Bušić, successful and very creative Croatian entrepreneur in the city of Zagreb.
Ferdinand Budicki the first driver in Zagreb to have passed a driving test in 1910
At the beginning of the 20th century, the royal government stipulated that every car in the city of Zagreb must have a license plate and that each driver must pass a driving exam. There was a problem, however, for not even a single official knew how to drive. It was agreed that Ferdinand Budicki, the owner of the first car in Zagreb, would teach four civil servants how to drive. The examination committee began its work late July 1910, and the first to have been summoned to take the exam was Ferdinand Budicki.

Giorgio Surian is the most famous opera singer that Croatia ever had. He is the internationally acclaimed bass-baritone of worldwide reputation.
